JEE Main is conducted by NTA and is the gateway to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs via JoSAA counselling. JEE Advanced is conducted by IITs and is the only route to IIT admissions — you must first qualify JEE Main (top ~2.5 lakh candidates) to appear for JEE Advanced. Both tests have different syllabi and difficulty levels.
NIT cutoffs change every year based on the number of students, difficulty level, and seat availability — so no fixed percentile is reliable. Top NITs in CSE are the most competitive, while lower NITs and non-CSE branches are easier to get into. Category also matters a lot — OBC/SC/ST cutoffs are significantly lower. It depends on your goals. CSE leads to the highest-paying IT jobs and is the most in-demand. ECE is great if you want core electronics or software — it keeps both options open. Mechanical has strong core industry placements but lower IT sector salaries by default. College matters more than branch — a Mechanical degree from NIT Trichy beats a CSE degree from a weak private college.
JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) conducts centralised counselling for IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs after JEE results. You fill your college-branch preferences in order, and seats are allotted based on your rank and category. There are 5–6 rounds. Yes, absolutely. At 75–80 percentile, you may qualify for smaller NITs (in reserved categories), state government colleges via UPTAC/AKTU/KCET, and reputed private universities like LPU, Geeta University, Amity, etc. Many state counselling portals have good engineering colleges with decent placements. Don't just focus on JoSAA — explore state options actively.
IITs generally have better brand value, research culture, and top-tier placements. However, top NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal) are excellent and often match IIT placements in certain sectors. A newer IIT with a less preferred branch isn't always better than a top NIT with a strong branch. Always weigh institute reputation + branch + placement record together.
